Don C. Johnson, CLI, CII
Trace Investigations’ founder and president is a former photographer and military intelligence analyst, who entered the private investigation business in New York City as a field agent for Burns International Investigation Services. After a number of years traveling the United States investigating insurance fraud, Johnson started Trace Investigations in Bloomington, Indiana in 1990, specializing in litigation support services for personal injury and criminal defense attorneys, and background screening services for businesses. Johnson is a founding member of the Indiana Society of Professional Investigators and the Indiana Association of Background Screeners. In 1997 he became the first Certified Legal Investigator™ in the state of Indiana. In 2001 Johnson was appointed to the Indiana Private Investigator and Security Guard Licensing Board, and currently serves as chairman. He has received numerous awards and honors, including life membership in the International Intelligence Network. Johnson serves as chief executive officer of Trace Investigations and is proud of his team. They are gratified that clients keep returning for solutions to their legal concerns and business needs.
Rebecca Medlock Johnson, MBA
Co-owner/Vice President/Chief Financial Officer
Trace Investigations’ co-owner is a former marketing representative and bank officer, who brought nearly two decades of business development and banking experience when she joined our firm in 2001. A graduate of Indiana University, Becky received her Master of Business Administration from Indiana Wesleyan University while serving as a vice president in a regional bank. In addition to her company management duties at Trace, she is also an experienced investigator, working primarily in intellectual property investigations. Becky was instrumental in setting up our firm’s background screening service. She is a life member of the Indiana Society of Professional Investigators.
Tina M. Skirvin, CCDI, CII
Legal Investigator/Vice President
Since joining Trace Investigations in 2008, Tina has worked hundreds of cases, including elder fraud investigations and numerous investigations and witness interviews in personal injury and criminal defense cases. She has been praised for her work in criminal defense investigations by attorneys with the Indiana Public Defender Council. In June 2015 Tina received the prestigious designation, Certified Criminal Defense Investigator, awarded by the Criminal Defense Training Council. Prior to joining Trace full time, Tina was a senior criminal court reporter in Monroe County Circuit Court. She brings her many years in the criminal justice system to good use in her investigations in the private sector. Tina has a degree in paralegal studies and previously worked for a law firm in Bloomington. She is a member of the Indiana Society of Professional Investigators, the National Association of Legal Investigators, the National Defender Investigator Association and the Council of International Investigators. Tina is Trace Investigations’ chief field investigator and case manager. She works closely with our clients.
Christine R. Koryta
Legal Investigator/Managing Partner, Background Screening
Christine Koryta joined Trace Investigations in 2013 as the Managing Partner of our background screening division. Christine manages existing and new client services related to background, pre-employment and post-employment screening. She has a Bachelor of Arts from Eckerd College, a Master of Fine Arts from Florida International University, and spent a decade as the administrator for a non-profit organization located in St. Petersburg, Florida. Christine is a member of the National Association of Professional Background Screeners and the Society of Human Resource Management. She brings her unique skills in information and resource management to Trace Investigations.
Linda is originally from New York and prior to joining the Trace background screening division she worked in the human resources field for over a decade. She studied Human Resource Management at Bellevue University and is PHR Certified. Linda is a member of the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS) and has the NAPBS FCRA Basic Certification. Linda works with every component of the background screening process from start to finish and continues her education in new regulations and laws regarding background screening. Due to her continued training and her experience and involvement in the analytical process in background investigations, Linda is able to execute a thorough and accurate pre-employment screening.
Kaytlyn Black, CCII
Originally from Bloomington, Kaytlyn returned after studying Criminal Justice and Sociology at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville, Indiana. Kaytlyn is Trace Investigations’ assistant field investigator. In April 2019 Kaytlyn received the prestigious designation, Certified Cyber Intelligence Investigator, awarded by the McAfee Institute. She is a member of the National Association of Legal Investigators and the Indiana Society of Professional Investigators. Prior to joining the Trace team full time in 2017, Kaytlyn gained valuable experience within the criminal justice system through positions at a law firm in Bloomington and in the investigations department of the Vanderburgh County, Indiana prosecutor’s office.
Nigel “Buddy” Newlin
Buddy Newlin specializes in courthouse research and record retrieval, covering Trace Investigations assignments throughout southern Indiana. He has extensive experience with the circuit and superior courts that require “hands-on” research. Buddy served with the U.S. Army First Infantry Division, “The Big Red One,” during the Vietnam Era. Returning to his native Indiana, he attended Indiana University majoring in history. Buddy serves on the board of directors of the American Legion post in Bloomington, Indiana and has been recognized for his community volunteer work by the local chamber of commerce. He joined Trace Investigations in 1995 and worked as a surveillance operative and process server before assuming courthouse duties.
Michael J. Koryta
An experienced legal investigator, Michael Koryta graduated from Indiana University with a degree in criminal justice. While in college, he worked part-time for Trace Investigations and as a reporter for the local newspaper before moving to Trace Investigations full-time after graduation. At the same time, he was beginning his career as an accomplished novelist. A New York Times bestselling author, Michael has published over a dozen suspense novels and has recently moved into television and screen writing. He has taught at IU’s School of Journalism and, fortunately for Trace Investigations, continues his association with our firm by taking on special investigation assignments.
